How’s Your Time?

Every man, woman and child has the same amount hours in everyday. We are all given the exact same amount, but we surely don’t use it the same. I wonder if, at the end of our life, will there be a measuring stick (with a digital readout) that tells us just how much of our life’s efforts really amounted to something significant…

Think about it.

BUSYNESS OF LIFE: WORTH / LACK = VALUE

If there was, what would your percentage be? Would all your busyness in life amount to good stuff, quality efforts and true, needed changes and value placed into your life and the lives of others? Or would you find that the equation only equaled a pile of, what I call, “cotton candy?”

Lots of sweetness (or sickening sugar and stickiness, depending on your preference) but nothing substantial.

Think about it.

2017 is quickly coming to an end. What if just this year was measured.

What would your equation say about you?

Job 14:5, “Since his days are determined,

The number of his months is with You;

You have appointed his limits, so that he cannot pass.”

Ecclesiastes 1:3, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven”

The New Year’s Resolution

What do you think about New Year’s Resolutions? Here’s mine…

the grizzle grist mill

New Year’s Resolutions. We all make them every year. So many of us start on January 1 with a long list of all the things we need to change. You know the list… Lose weight. Exercise more. Be more organized. Reach out more. Be more kind. Be more diligent. Remember special dates better. Eat better. Just simply, Be better. Too many stores make a lot of money this time of year with all the diet plans, gym memberships, organizational books and storage totes that are bought during this month.

Then, long about March 15, all of that money becomes a waste, and the commitments slowly fade away, as we slip back into our old habits and routines, because it was simply a vocalized pledge with no foundation laid for success. It was a mental note with no accountability or standards set for true inner change…because after all, it’s so much…

Embrace Your Grace

I received this wall art for Christmas, and it made me cry (For those of you who know me, yeah, I know that’s a shocker! 😂) This meant so much to me at this time, because my husband and I had just had a conversation a few weeks ago about this very thing, and I was trying to believe in my heart what my head knows to be true of this statement.

If you don’t know me (which, just read a few past blogs tagged “family,” and you’ll quickly understand), you may not know that my family is my world. That old adage, “God, Family, Country?” …yeah, that just about sums me up. I love my family, and I love spending time with them. It doesn’t really matter what we do. Yet, there are times, when I feel like I need to be a better mom for them. No, honestly, I feel like I need to be “Supermom,” and as much as I counsel other moms that this is a farce, and they should never try to live up to this fantasy, sometimes, I find myself falling into the mind trap as well.

A few weeks ago, that was the problem. I was feeling overwhelmed with a “to do” list and piles of clean laundry to be fold, and a ton of other “musts” to be accomplished. I was feeling down and out, because I “didn’t have time” to fix meals for our family, keep us on a good, healthy schedule, fix the boys’ lunches, keep the house “spit-spot” clean, and follow all the expectations that a “good mother” should follow. I was feeling like I don’t do enough for my little family, and I was unloading on my husband. He listened…and listened…cuz, he’s such a good man.😉

We got through the junk, and we talked about improvements that were actually needed, and then he put his arms around me and just hugged me. He said, “I love you. You’re a great mom to our boys, and I wouldn’t want any other woman as my wife.” Then, he gave me this piece for Christmas. … you see, now, the reason for all the tears? (Yeah, I told you he was great!) 😉

I told you this story to tell you this: if you’re a mom, and you’re struggling today with feeling overwhelmed, insignificant, less than, lonely, etc., there is hope. Don’t allow the “Pinterest Moms” and “Facebook Supermoms” of this world to bring you down with expectations and burdens that you were never meant to carry. Recognize that God wouldn’t have put you in the family you’re in and wouldn’t have made you the mom of the kids you have if He wasn’t going to equip you and help you to be who He’s called you to be!

Will you need to re-evaluate your priorities, agendas and goals from time to time? Yes. Do you need to make sure you’re keeping “the main thing the main thing?” Yes. Will you need to step back from failures and mistakes, forgive yourself, ask for forgiveness from others, and start anew? Yes. And will there be needed improvements along the way? Oh. My. Goodness. YES AND AMEN!!

However, if you’re never doing these things, you’ll never grow, and your family will never be challenged to be more. A beautiful garden never becomes truly beautiful unless it has a season of pruning.

Just remember, you have to find your own niche here in this world of “motherhood.” You have to do what’s truly best for you, your husband (if married), and your children. What works amazing for one family might just bring down disaster in another. What would never work for your family might work perfectly for mine.

None of us are clones, and God never intended us to be! Can we learn from each other? Yes. However, every family must seek God to find what is His best and become just that!!

Choose Well

I saw this post the other day, and I thought, “This describes exactly how I’m feeling and what I needed to hear today!” It was Christmas Eve morning. I had 2 church services to attend, songs to sing while on praise team, a devotion to share during offering, Christmas gifts to deliver, people to greet and names to remember, smiles to give and necks to hug. All that before 11:30 in the morning, and I’m not exactly a morning person… Really, it was no different than any other Sunday (except the gifts), and I really do love what I do; yet, that morning, I was feeling frazzled, stressed out and insecure.

Honestly, I had stayed up too late the night before, and I was feeling weary. I had been excited about Christmas coming, and I had gotten everything done about 11:00pm; yet, I just kind of piddled until I got sleepy, an hour after midnight, which doesn’t fare too well when you rise at 6:00am on Sunday!

I was, also, going through a bit of an emotional battle, feeling unworthy, insignificant and internally “bluesy.” All of this was adding up to make the day a very sour lemon! Then, I came across this pic that I had just saved the night before, thinking I might use it for a blog one day, (lol!) and it was as if everything came full circle right a that moment. I was reminded of my philosophy for living: Life is what you make it. It’s all in your perspective and the choices you make.

I didn’t need to let my circumstances rule my emotions. I didn’t need to allow my feelings to be my guide, and I could not permit my choice of lack of sleep and struggling thought patterns to dictate how I would worship my God, engage with people, and follow through with the commitments I had made.

I had a choice to make, and I decided to choose well. I chose to breathe it all in. I chose to slow down, be deliberate and be aware. I chose to have joy, to rejoice in our Savior, and to be thankful in my heart and my head. I chose to savor life and those around me. I chose to smile and allow the wonder and happiness of the moments to not only fill my smile but to fill my soul and my whole being.

It was Christmas Eve, and this one only comes once. More importantly, it was Sunday, and we live in a free country where we can still worship as a congregation. We serve a great God who is worthy of all our praise! I wasn’t going to miss that! It was, also, the day I get to see a lot of people who may or may not be there tomorrow, because after all, none of us are guaranteed the next breathe, and in this crazy world, you never know what might happen!

It was an amazing day, and I am so thankful I made the right choices. 😊

We all have choices to make everyday, every hour, and even minute to minute. What will you choose today?

Fears Have You?

As this year draws to a close, I wonder, what fears are you battling tonight? What fears have you overcome this year? Maybe there is a fear you are seriously trying to overcome, but you don’t know exactly how to “squash it?” There is Hope, and there is an answer…

Trusting in God doesn’t instantaneously wipe away all fear simply because we believe… yeah, I said that. Now, those of you who believe in Him, please, don’t pick up your rocks to throw, just hear me out…

He is a good God. He is a BIG God, and He is a God who loves us so very much that He sent His son to die for us to save us. He is a God who, when He says in His Word He will do something, you can be 100% sure He will follow through. He’s a God of absolute Truth. He IS Truth; therefore, He simply cannot lie.

So, when He says to fear not, because He is with you, He means it. He’s right there with you. Yet, sometimes, even when we pray, believe and trust in Him, that fear can linger, not because He’s not God anymore but more because, sometimes, our heart has to grow stronger in our belief…because sometimes, we are fighting a fear that has deep roots in our lives, and we have to slay that giant on the battlefield of our faith just as David went out on the battlefield with Goliath and struck him down…because sometimes, we’ve got to lay down that fear with which we’ve walked in agreement since our childhood and stand firm in our faith and believe in His sovereignty and grace regardless of what our feelings might be screaming at us…because sometimes, our faith has been weakened by our lack of preparation, or because our consistency of feeding the flesh rather than the spirit, or because our faith has been beaten and worn due to previous battles, and we just need to rely on Him more than our own strength and ability.

That’s what it all really boils down to: total reliance on Him rather than ourselves. That’s where He wants us. That’s where He does His best work, because that’s where our testimony isn’t how we did some great thing to conquer the fear, it becomes how our Great God did an amazing thing and conquered the fear in us and through us!

So, next time you’re battling a new fear, or you’re trying to conquer an old one, and it just seems that demon is gaining ground, just call on His Name, trust Him and believe; them, watch Him do what He does best! 😉

Tuesday’s Treats #100

Roost

Location: Greenville, SC

This is a great lunch venue right in the heart of downtown Greenville. It has a great atmosphere and friendly staff. The menu is a bit limited, but what they have is delicious. Our crowd got burgers and fries, chicken fingers and the salad bar. The burgers were great. The chicken fingers were tasty; although, the breading was a little too thick and crunchy.

The salad bar is absolutely filling and amazing. Everything is fresh and delightful from the three choices of greens, two cheeses, a plethora of other veggies, bacon, cranberries, and croutons, etc. The dressings appear to be homemade, and that’s just the start. Included in the bar are two soups and three choices of flatbread pizza. The soup I chose was tomato basil bisque: scrumptious. They also had vegetable beef. The flatbreads were plain cheese, fresh pepperoni, and spinach and mozzarella. The cheese was more like cheese bread. The pepperoni was very tasty, and if you like spinach on your pizza, I’d say you’d probably like this one, too. I wasn’t much a fan, but it’s not really my preference.

If you’re ever planning to stay in downtown Greenville, check out the Hyatt, connected right next door, and adjacent to that is Kilwins. You can go there for dessert!😉 Roost does serve breakfast and dinner as well; so, it’s incredibly convenient to have this right next door to your hotel, and the NOMA square, in which it is housed, is really cool. Here is their website to find out more.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Merry Christmas to you and yours! We pray this will be a joyous holiday season filled with laughter and good times! God bless!

Ps. Thank you for being a great reader; even though, my blogging has been pretty lax the last part of this year. My goal is to begin again just as soon as I can, and I believe I will have quite a bit of catching up (for you) to do! There have been many new and exciting things going on here, and I’ve just kind of taken a break from the daily writing habit, but I need to and will begin again soon!

*note: I do not possess or own this pic. Found it from a simple google search.*

Tuesday’s Treats #99

Underground Coffeehouse

Location: Greenville, SC

This is one of the coolest coffee shops I’ve been to in a long time. You walk down below the sidewalk; so, it’s appropriately named, “Underground.” They have a plethora of coffee and desserts from which to choose. We went two days in a row, and everything was delicious. I had a coconut mocha, recommended by the barista, because I was indecisive. Excellent choice. It was absolutely delicious. The first day, we had just had a dessert; so, I just enjoyed my mocha. The second day, I ordered the apple cider pie a la mode. Yum. Now, it was a little heavy on the cinnamon; so, beware, but it was still very tasty. Our sons had a chocolate chip cookie, which was a little crunchy but still tasty, a s’mores iced and a caramel iced coffee. All were yummy.

The atmosphere is casual and cozy. WiFi is available, and everything is nice and clean; even though, you bus your own table. (Sometimes, that can leave a place a little less clean than desired.) They even have two separate movie rooms that can be rented for group venues. Oh, from glancing at their website, they also serve breakfast and lunch. Check it out; I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. 😉

Tuesday’s Treats #98

MochaMoe’s Coffeehouse

Location: Flowery Branch, Ga

This is a great place to grab a quick bite to go or to come and sit for a 2 hour long coffee chat. It’s comfortable. It’s cozy, and they’ve got a great cup of joe. They have live music on some weekends, and you can listen to many new and local artists as you sip your coffee and chat for a while. They even have a little play area for the kiddos. There are comfy couches, club chairs and cafe style tables and chairs. They have yummy soups and bagels, muffins and homemade cakes that vary from day to day. They may even serve lunch, but I’ve always been there in the evenings for coffee; so, I can’t speak to that. It’s a great place to meet a brand new friend or catch up on news with an lifetime companion who’s been absence for a while.

Check out their website for hours and upcoming guests.

Tuesday’s Treats #97

Ma’s Fish Camp

Islamorada, Fl

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!

If you’re from the South like I am, one of the first things you’ll notice while in the Keys, THEY DON’T HAVE SWEET TEA! 😳 I have to say, that took some adjustment, but we did it! 😂 However, Ma’s Fish Camp will treat you right, because they’re trying to serve you genuine sweet tea. It’s not totally sweet, Southern style, but it’s pretty close. It’s strong and almost sweet, sweet but stops just short of syrup. 😉 It’s definitely worth trying.

Mind you, the goodness doesn’t stop at the sweet tea! That’s just where it begins. 😉 The atmosphere is comfy cozy, like home, and the staff is friendly, even when they get crazy busy on Sunday afternoons. Every bit of the food is absolutely delicious!! We didn’t have one thing that wasn’t scrumptious; although, the Caesar salad was a little different, it was still yummy.

One thing Ma’s Fish Camp does very different than any other place we found in the Keys: key lime pie. They offer a regular type, with a “mile high meringue,” and a deep dish that is frozen served with hot strawberry compote. It’s a novel idea, really; however, our party was really wishing for a slice of the regular after we had it. If you’re not desiring traditional key lime pie, or you like your pie more of the “ice cream” consistency, you’ll love this, because it’s like a great key lime pie ice cream sundae, complete with graham cracker crust, strawberry compote and homemade whip cream. Yet, if you’re longing for the traditional key lime pie, you better opt for the regular style. It looked delicious on others’ plates, we were just too full and too spent to try it. … Next time! 😉 Get there early, too. She draws a crowd fast at lunchtime!

Check them out here.
